First constructed in 1823, the mill served the community of Fall River, powered by the waters of Clear Creek to grind wheat, corn and livestock feed. The complex also housed a timber mill, general store and various community facilities and housing. It was burned to the ground during the Civil War when General Sherman’s troops embarked on their infamous scorched-earth march through the South.
Located close to the small town of Leoma, the area is a mostly rural region with highlights including 1,100-acre David Crockett State Park. Lawrence County is centered around the county seat of Lawrenceburg, once home to one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in the world, the since-bankrupt Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company. North of Lawrenceburg, Etheridge is the site of a long-standing Amish community.
