Completely surrounded by National Forest Service land and bordered by wilderness on one side, the Oleo Ranch near Lake City, Colorado, is an off-grid mountain retreat that serves as the perfect outdoor-adventure basecamp.
Oleo Ranch is one of our favorite places on the planet. Truly off the grid, no electricity, no media, quiet slice of heaven on earth. We spend our days fishing, hiking and soaking up the Rocky Mountains and the evenings surrounded by family watching the FIRE channel on the fireplace. Truly a great place to disconnect for a while and enjoy life. – Mike S., Oleo Ranch TripAdvisor review

Situated at 10,500 feet between Slumgullion and Spring Creek passes to the southeast of Lake City, Oleo Ranch occupies 165 acres of mountain meadows, aspen groves, spruce forest and riparian lands bordering Cebolla Creek. The creek itself is one of the ranch’s finest natural assets, offering some 1.5 miles of excellent small-stream fishing for wild brook and brown trout.
The property is centered around a main ranch house, bunkhouse and seven roomy rentable cabins. Welcoming many of its guests back year after year, it has been in operation as a wilderness retreat for many years. Along with the draw of dropping off the grid in a place without phone, Internet or TV access, the ranch is prime for adventures including hiking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, wildlife-watching and more.
Indeed, when it comes to hunting, Oleo Ranch occupies a natural corridor with water and cover to attract plentiful elk, mule deer and moose. The ranch is located within Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s Unit 66 and close to Unit 76, both of which are limited draw units renowned for trophy elk. A very limited season is available for moose in these units, but the moose population is thriving, and hunting opportunities are predicted to increase in coming years.
Lake City is in the only incorporated township in 1,117-square-mile Hinsdale County, a veritable frontier region that’s made up almost entirely (96 percent) of public lands, including four wilderness areas. Indeed, the county has the fewest miles of road per capita, along with the most land area located beyond road access, making Hinsdale County the most remote county in the lower 48. With all that wilderness on its doorstep, Oleo Ranch is the place to start your journey of discovery!
