The dream of escaping the city and owning your own plot of land is something that inspires individuals, couples and families throughout the country, whether it’s for a quieter lifestyle, cheaper cost of living or a sense of greater security and privacy. The motivations can be as varied as the land upon which property and land buyers invest their hopes and dreams.

To help try capture a sense of what’s available out there in these diverse and spectacular lands of America, we took a stroll through each of the 50 states to find property and land for sale for around $500,000. From a century-old fixer-upper along the shores of Michigan to prime oceanfront land on the California coast, a half-million dollars can represent very different visions of the landowning dream depending on where you choose to invest.

The National Association of Realtors lists the median U.S. home price in 2015 at $222,400, with West Coast states recording the highest median property values of any region in the country. The properties below, ranging from between one to 165 acres, represent mostly residential land for sale or undeveloped land with potential as future residential or recreational properties.
