Indulge your oenophile ambitions instantly at this 40-acre vineyard and winery in the Chehalem Mountains AVA—American Viticultural Area—of Oregon’s award-winning Willamette Valley wine region. First established in the 1990s by a winemaker who’d honed his skills in Burgundy growing Pinot noirs, Árdiri’s Winery & Vineyards‘ current owners, John Compagno and Gail Lizak, have continued the Burgundian tradition of dense plantings of vines to deliver wines that are complex and robust in flavors.
This winery outside Cornelius in Washington County, on the north side of Chehalem Mountain, has a perfect horseshoe bowl setting. Tree-covered slopes form the horseshoe’s sides to the north and south, a grassy hill connects them on the west. That leaves a wide opening pointed east, across acres of vines and, in the distance, a postcard view of snow-capped Mount Hood. – Terry Richard, The Oregonian

Less than an hour west of Portland, the vineyard is a popular day trip for wine lovers sampling from the 500-plus vineyards that dot the Willamette Valley, which runs from more than a hundred miles from the Columbia River near Portland to just south of Eugene. Chehalem Mountains AVA is one of six sub-appellations in the region, which enjoys a long, gentle growing season that’s fed by maritime precipitation coming off the Pacific and spared the colder, harsher climes of the eastern portion of the state. The Willamette Valley is known throughout the world for the quality of its Pinot noirs.

Recognized by The Oregonian as one of the 10 Oregon wineries where the view is as good (or better) than the pinot, Árdiri’s visitors can enjoy the Oregon scenery from an outdoor terrace that looks out over 15 acres of planted vines. A newly constructed LEED-certified tasting room accommodates guests and groups, while an outdoor fireplace and three permanent gas fire pits offer warming comfort and ambiance on cooler days throughout the year.
Like the tasting facilities, the wine-making storage capacity and amenities are modern and impeccably maintained for maximizing quality and production output (currently approximately 4,000 cases of wine per year). The subterranean barrel room requires no cooling, and is heated by forced air, while the fermentation room offers close to 1,900 square feet. Elevated walkways run the length of the north and south walls. Equipment included in the sale is comprehensive—from harvest to bottling. A complete small lab rounds out the space. Large doors open to the west, leading to the covered crush pad and additional tank room. Adjacent is a 2,400-square-foot temperature-controlled building that is currently used for cased goods storage.
An adjacent custom-built home offers modern, comfortable living space for the vineyard’s new owners, including two bedrooms and great room and dining/kitchen area that offers ample room for entertaining.
The Chehalem Mountains wine region sits on a series of sedimentary ridges that provide diverse soils and growing conditions at slightly higher altitudes than other Willamette Valley vineyards. Some 150 vineyards are located throughout the hilly countryside, comprising three counties—Yamhill, Washington and Clackamas—which frame the southwestern suburbs of the Portland metropolitan area.
