A storied Southern hunting estate was listed for sale last week for an impressive $55 million. The 10,300-acre Cabin Bluff plantation sits on the shores of Georgia’s Cumberland River across the inlet from Cumberland Island National Seashore, and is reported to be the oldest hunting club in the United States.

Established as an exclusive hunting retreat in 1928, the property’s original history dates back to a century earlier when the owners of the Sea Island Cotton company founded the Camden Hunt Club on what is now known as Cabin Bluff. Automobile magnate Howard E. Coffin purchased the Lowcountry estate in 1927, founding the Cabin Bluff hunting and fishing club the following year to host wealthy industrialists, Southern bluebloods and the likes of U.S. President Calvin Coolidge.
After decades of operating as an intensely private club, Cabin Bluff opened its doors to the public as a corporate retreat and events venue—General Norman Schwarzkopf’s daughter was married here—in 2010, with accommodations for up to 40 guests in the renovated main lodge and eight guest cabins.
Beyond its Jazz Age history and top-notch hospitality facilities, it’s the caliber of the sporting opportunities at Cabin Bluff that make it one of the South’s most unique recreational opportunities. Recognized with a One Trident rating through the Beretta Trident Program, Cabin Bluff boasts some 1,500 acres of bobwhite quail habitat, along with opportunities to hunt wild turkey in spring and wild boar and deer each fall. A 13-station sporting clays course offers further options, not to mention coastal and deep-sea fishing excursions that offer anglers the chance to cast for redfish, bluefish, sea trout, tarpon and other local species.
A popular vacation getaway just north of Jacksonville across the Florida-Georgia line, there is no shortage of area options to keep visitors as active (or inactive) as they choose. The barrier island beaches of Cumberland and Jekyll islands provide miles of surf and white-sand relaxation, while the inlets and creeks of the tidal marshlands draw kayakers and birders. Other area activities include golf, including on Cabin Bluff’s private layout, biking and hiking.
