Area History
Goliad County has a storied place in Texas history. It was the site of the Goliad Massacre, the first Declaration of Texas Independence, and the Fannin Battleground. All these events contributed to the independence of Texas and the battle of San Jacinto.
Of course, the area’s settlement history predates the Texas Revolution. The Double Q Ranch is home to the remains of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Mission, located near the northwest property line. Established in November 1754 by Father Juan de Dios Camberos of the College of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Zacatecas in an attempt to make peace with the various Karankawan tribes—the Cujanes, Copanes, Guapites and Karankawas proper, who did not get along with the other Native Americans at the existing missions. The mission was named by Capt. Manuel Ramírez de la Piscina, who was stationed at nearby Presidio La Bahia, for the church in hometown in Spain.
