The former Virginia estate of John and Jacqueline Kennedy is back on the market this week, listed for sale at $5,950,000 by Mary Ann McGowan of Thomas & Talbot Real Estate. This represents a steep discount from the previous 2015 listing price of $7,950,000.
Perched on a hilltop in Virginia’s bucolic horse country, the now-historic ranch home was built by the couple in late 1962 and was ready for occupancy in spring 1963. Although Jacqueline Kennedy visited several times following its completion, the family reportedly only spent their first weekend there on October 25, 1963. The president’s widow—who wrote about the house in a handwritten note, “This house may not be perfectly proportioned, but it has EVERYTHING” —sold the house in 1964 following JFK’s assassination. The estate is called Wexford after the county in Ireland from where President Kennedy’s family hailed.
The four-bedroom, five-bathroom home sits on the lower slopes of Rattlesnake Mountain, looking out over a picturesque 167-acre estate near Middleburg, Virginia. Middleburg is known for its equestrian and fox-hunting community, and is a popular day-trip destination for Washington, D.C., area residents. Area attractions include a number of vineyards and breweries and hiking trails that include a stretch of the Appalachian Trail.
