One of a several mid-19th-century homes located in South Carolina’s Liberty Hill Historic District, “The Columns” has been the home of the Thompson family since it was first built in the 1850s. The original family patriarch, James Shropshire Thompson, hired architect Robert Hamilton to design the 5,097-square-foot house, which was constructed from local timber and features a series of Doric columns along its patios to give the home its name.

The historic town of Liberty Hill was placed on South Carolina’s National Register in 1978 for its collection of pre-Civil War homes and architecture. In an area of former cotton plantations, the topography here includes a high, narrow plateau that affords extensive views across four counties and the fertile Catawba/Wateree River Valley.
Along with an interior that speaks to the six-bedroom’s home bygone era, the grounds include mature trees and landscaping that hearken back to the gardens of stately Old World estates. Hand-hewed granite fence posts remain in place along the front of the property.
