Just over a five-hour flight from the West Coast, I was surprised that Alaska was that close. I had always thought it was just a quick hop over the Bering Sea to Russia. But it was a smooth flight on Alaskan Air that brought us to the much larger than anticipated Kodiak Island, about 3,500 square miles in size.
