Congratulations to Mark Pyrak with Fort Benton Realty LLP for his sale this week of 6,240-acre Wilson Farms in northern Montana. The property, located between 20 to 35 miles southwest of Havre, comprises a series of non-contiguous parcels in use for winter and spring wheat along with several other crops.

Along with approximately 6,100 acres of cropland, two reservoirs could be used for horses and livestock. The property’s Hingham Place farmstead features a farm-style home, machine shop and some 77,000 bushels of round-bin grain storage. Recreational opportunities on the land include ATVing, upland game-bird hunting and the occasional deer and antelope. Fishing is available on nearby Tiber reservoir or throughout the area’s Bears Paw Mountains.

Hill County, of which Havre is the county seat, is a sparsely-populated (less than six people per square mile), rural area on the border with Canada and the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan to its north. As you’d expect, farming and associated agricultural services are the main economic drivers here. Sharing a section of the country’s northerly “Hi-Line,” Hill County is bisected by U.S. Highway 2 and a leg of Amtrak’s epic Empire Builder service between Chicago and Seattle.
