Congratulations to Sheldon Grothaus and the team at Texas Ranch Sales for the sale of 1,500-acre Rocky Creek Ranch near Hondo, Texas, on January 29, 2018. The sale of this beautiful recreational property in the sought-after ranch country west of San Antonio was the biggest land sale both in price and acreage based on data recorded through the Lands of America Comparable Sales program over the previous seven days.

Occupying an area of rolling terrain and elevated views, Rocky Creek Ranch is accessible throughout via approximately seven miles of private blacktop roadway. The interior of the high-fenced property is organized into three pastures and offers a mix of native grasses and extensive canopy of giant live oaks, offering good cover and forage for wildlife and livestock.

Rocky Creek Ranch’s previous owner maintained careful soil and water conservation practices, including working with the San Antonio Water System to create a sustainable ranch environment for both plant and wildlife populations. While the majority of the property is currently under a SAWS water conservation easement, it’s well watered with eight water wells, four ponds, numerous wildlife water troughs and the eponymous wet-weather Rocky Creek.

Wildlife here includes whitetail deer, dove, quail, and turkey, as well as a few introduced wildlife species like Axis, Blackbuck and Red stag. Birders will appreciate the multitude of annual and seasonal birds that flutter throughout the ranch’s 1,500 acres.

Rocky Creek Ranch sits about 15 miles north of the country town of Hondo, the county seat of Medina County and a popular spot for daytrippers and weekend visitors from San Antonio. It’s a region of BBQ joints, cowboy towns, dude ranches and big working cattle ranches, located in the area where the distinctive rolling landscape of Hill Country transitions to South Texas Brush Country. Hill Country’s Bandera, the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” is an easy 30 miles north of the ranch, with the hiking and biking trails of Hill Country State Natural Area sitting en route.
