White Ranch offers pivot-irrigated farmland, high-quality grazing and good hunting along 3.5 miles of the Cimarron River in southeast Colorado. The 320 acres of irrigated corn lie next to the heavy cottonwood/tamarisk cover of the river bottom, providing ideal habitat for good numbers of elk, whitetail deer and mule deer. Bobwhite quail are abundant in normal moisture years. There are 15 water wells on the property, with capacity and permits for irrigation of 740 acres, presenting the ranch’s new owner an opportunity for further wildlife habitat enhancement and production capacity.
White Ranch is approximately 12 miles northwest of Elkhart, Kansas and 52 miles southeast of Springfield, Colorado in Baca County, Colorado. The ranch is rated for 300 cow/calf pairs or 600 yearlings year-round, and includes a 300-head-capacity feedlot.
Baca County is a rural, agricultural region that includes a short section of the historic Santa Fe Trail’s Cimarron Route. More recently, the county was among the hardest hit during the 1930s “Dust Bowl,” an event that precipitated a push by the Federal Government to purchase areas of cultivated land for soil conservation and subsequent rehabilitation to native grassland. Today, the U.S. Forest Service supervises 220,000 acres of this land purchased in the 1930s, labeled the Cimarron National Grasslands, in both Baca County and neighboring Las Animas County. A similar area, the 520-square-mile Cimarron National Grassland, sits in adjacent Morton County, Kansas.
