Congratulations to Mike Lansdell of Wiregrass Land Group for his sale this week of a 3,006-acre timber tract in southern Georgia. This sale was recorded on October 16, 2017, through the Lands of America Comparable Sales Program. The Strickland Tract, located near Lakeland in Lanier County, had been under a timber lease for the past 60 years and was sold for $3.3 million.

Advertised at the time as “one of the largest, contiguous, private tracts for sale in southeast Georgia,” the sold acreage has potential future applications for crop or cattle farming or replanting for lumber.

An area dotted with numerous inland lakes, Lanier County (the county seat of which is Lakeland) is home to the 4,049-acre Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge contains a variety of habitats including cypress swamp, freshwater marsh, uplands, and open water, and is home to a diverse array of bird and fish species.

As we noted following last week’s sale of a 1,287-acre timber tract in the east-central region of the state, Georgia’s forest industry is the second largest industry in the state in terms of employment and wages and salaries. Some two-thirds of the Peach State is under forest cover, most of which is held under private ownership for commercial harvesting.
